Vegan Camp 2017 New Zealand
April 14, 2017 - April 17, 2017
All vegans are invited to come to the Vegan Camp/Kaimanga Mutunga Wiki Aotearoa, which is held biennially in the mountain village of Hanmer Springs, in New Zealand’s beautiful South Island.
Vegan Camp is open to all vegans. Please note that the definition of vegan is ‘someone who excludes all animal products from their diet’. Our venue is wheelchair accessible. This is a family friendly event. Vegan Camp is the place where we just are vegan and we don’t have to explain or justify our veganism.
If you are not vegan you can attend Vegan Camp by going vegan for at least two weeks before or by coming with a vegan friend. Please understand that you will be in a vegan space and behave respectfully. This means not talking about non-vegan products while you are at Vegan Camp or explaining how you can’t give up dairy cheese or anything else about your non-vegan diet, thoughts and lifestyle. It is not the place to go to if you want to learn more or be convinced about becoming vegan. Do that before you come and just enjoy Vegan Camp for the pleasure of being in a vegan space for a weekend and having time out from the non-vegan world. That’s not to say Vegan Camp isn’t a place where you will learn more as there may be discussions and workshops which all vegans can learn from. But it won’t be Veganism 101.
Meals will be communally shared at tables. Our chefs will prepare the menu and cook the food, with help from volunteers. Please bring some vegan baking or a packet of vegan biscuits with you and hand in on arrival. These will be shared at supper times. Please tell us on the registration form if you have any allergies or intolerances we need to be aware of. We will cater for allergies and intolerances but not preferences.
Vegan Camp will be held at Hanmer Springs Forest Camp. Forest Camp has a range of accommodation options that should suit all budgets. As in 2013, families will be staying in the cabins unless they are camping. We will be using the Big Kitchen for meals and social activities.
Accommodation options including rooms for singles, couples and families or groups of friends with shared bathrooms (or private bathrooms at no extra cost for Kiwiable card holders). There are also two motel unit type of studio flats available. Tents and Campervans can also be accommodated; however the sites are not powered. The shared bathrooms are modern and very clean.
Activities are likely to include things like;
talks, board games, swimming, mini golf, walking, mountain biking, hanging out, shopping in the village, workshops, communal meals, quiz, vegan ice cream competition, easter egg hunt, movie night and free time.
Vegan Camp New Zealand is brought to you by the Christchurch Vegetarian Centre and the Vegan Society of New Zealand.
